Tucked away in the hills of Stannifer, near Inverell in northern NSW, is a place that completely
captured my heart — Sunset Creek Wildlife Sanctuary. This 80-hectare slice of paradise is
more than just bushland; it’s a working sanctuary dedicated to the rehabilitation of native
wildlife, and soon, it will also be a peaceful eco-tourism retreat.
We were lucky enough to get a sneak peek of this magical place before it officially opens later this year — thanks to our best friends, who happen to be the passionate and talented people behind it all.
An Immersive Wildlife Experience
Sunset Creek offers morning and afternoon tours where guests can explore the surrounding bush, learn about native flora and fauna, and develop bush skills like tracking wildlife. With over 80 hectares to roam, every walk offers something new — and no two experiences are ever the same.
During our visit, we met four joeys currently being cared for at the sanctuary, as well as a tiny
family of feathertail gliders. Watching the joeys being fed, bathed, and then let out of their
pouches for daily “play time” was absolutely unforgettable. It wasn’t just cute — it was deeply moving.
Julie-Anne and Jonathon, the heart and soul of Sunset Creek, are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about every animal in their care. Their commitment to conservation and education made our visit not only enjoyable but enlightening. We left with a new appreciation for Australian wildlife — and a head full of fun facts we’d never heard before!
Coming Soon: Glamping Under the Stars
Later this year, Sunset Creek will open to the public with something truly special: an adults-only glamping experience. Guests will be able to stay in eco-friendly bell tents, complete
with full-size beds and hot showers — the perfect blend of comfort and nature.
This initiative is more than just a unique getaway. Proceeds from the glamping experience will directly fund the sanctuary’s animal care and rescue programs — so your stay has real impact.
Why We Can’t Wait to Go Back
There’s something powerful about being in nature with a purpose. Sunset Creek isn’t just
beautiful — it’s meaningful. The sanctuary offers a rare chance to reconnect with the land, with wildlife, and with yourself. Whether you're a nature lover, a wildlife enthusiast, or just someone looking to slow down and recharge, this place will leave a lasting impression.
We're already planning our next visit. If you're lucky enough to spend some time at Sunset
Creek, prepare to fall in love — just like we did.
